Stop Hair Loss - Could This Controversial Remedy Really Help?

There are many reasons why people lose their hair, and a variety of remedies are sold to prevent it. A few of them work, at least for certain people and at least for a while, and most of them don't.

In this article, I will tell you about a way to possibly slow down or stop hair loss that has worked for me and also for a good friend of mine. And, according to testimonials on the internet, it has also worked for at least some other people. While the method may be controversial, its possible advantages should probably outweigh its disadvantage which is primarily the fact it's not exactly "proven." After all, it is practically free and definitely harmless.

It all started when I saw my friend again after a really long time. He looked much as I remembered him - except for his hair! It was thinning all over, quite noticeably.

Fast-forward a year, when I saw him again. I immediately noticed that his hair looked much better. Heck, he had the nice thick head of hair he used to have, way back when he was years younger.

Of course I immediately wanted to know: what did he do? By then, my own had started thinning as well, giving me a rather personal interest in his success.

So he told me what he had done to stop his hair falling out. The key to the puzzle, he said, seemed to have been Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a harsh detergent generally used for cleaning garage floors.

He had read somewhere that it had been found to cause hair to fall out. SLS, along with a related chemical, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, also happens to be a primary ingredient in just about any "normal" shampoo.

So he stopped using normal shampoos and found one without those ingredients instead. Miraculously, within weeks, his hair stopped falling out. After a few months, it actually started growing back.

That conversation marked the end of SLS-containing shampoos for me too. I figured, what did I have to lose?

I also went on the internet to investigate and discovered quite a bit of controversy over this theory, probably not surprisingly. I read about anecdotal evidence in favor of avoiding SLS, but there were no scientific studies that I could find. Some of the articles in favor of avoiding SLS also seemed traceable to vendors of non-SLS-containing shampoos, a fact that was pointed out in several counter-articles.

So what happened after I started using the new shampoo? My hair stopped falling out!

Seriously! It's been about five months now, and mine has noticeably thickened. And while there will always be a FEW hairs in the drain after I wash my hair - after all there's the natural growth cycle of hair - the amount of hair I find there has gone down so much that it can't possibly be just my imagination.

I used to have to pick thick "nests" of it from the drain both during and after each shower. Now there is just one, and that one is pretty flimsy and sparse, nothing like the semi-hairballs I used to find.

This raises a question: If it should be true that SLS is behind all this, how come it doesn't make everybody's fall out?

Here's my totally personal ad-hoc theory: SLS could be the metaphorical straw that broke the camel's back.

What this means in plain language is this: most of us aren't negatively affected by SLS because healthy unstressed hair can handle it just fine.

However, if there are enough stressors present that affect the health of someone's hair - stress, fatigue, aging, nutrition, health issues, and so on, then adding SLS on top of all that may be just a little too much. And that's when it triggers hair loss. Conversely, taking the SLS away in a situation like that may well make hair loss stop or slow it down. Or it may not - there may still be too many others stressors for any one particular head of hair to stop shedding.

Who knows. I have no idea if my theory is right, but it makes sense to me, it works for me, and so I will be using non-SLS shampoos from here on out.

And if your hair is thinning, you may want to consider experimenting as well. Health food store shampoos may cost a couple of dollars more per bottle, depending on what you're using now, but it's just a penny or two extra per wash at most. That's certainly far cheaper than any other hair loss remedy I've ever come across.

Which one to get? I won't recommend any particular brand. Just go to your trusty health food store and read the labels. You could pick the one that smells good, or the kind that seems right for your hair type. Or pick the volumizing shampoo - to make your hair look as full as possible while it grows back to be thick for real.

One last thing: Just like with Rogaine, where they warn you that you'll have to use it for quite a few months before you see any results, patience is of the essence here too. While your hair loss may slow down within weeks, you may want to give it at least several months before you judge the overall thickness of your hair. Hair grows slowly enough even under ideal circumstances, so it may take a while until you can really see a difference.

Removal of Freckles & Pigmentation by Laser

The removal of freckles and other benign skin pigmentation is now possible using dermatological lasers such as the Q-Switched Ruby, Nd:YAG and Alexandrite lasers.

Q-Switched Ruby, Nd:YAG and Alexandrite lasers can specifically target the pigmentation within the skin and hence greatly diminish the risk of unnecessary tissue damage and scarring.

Cosmetically, the results are much more superior to the older continuous wave lasers and other non-laser techniques.

A simple procedure?

The technique in using the Q-Switched lasers is to aim the laser light (varying 3-8mm circle) over the freckle or pigment lesion and then firing one or more pulses of the laser light till the entire area of pigmentation needing treatment has been covered.

Depending on the area being treated, the laser is relatively painless. Most patients do not need anaesthetic. If feels like a soft rubber band flicked at the skin.

Healing time

Healing time after the laser treatment is between 5-14 days as it depends on the individual and the type of lesion treated. A light brown crust initially forms over the treated area, which falls off after 5-10 days. Once the crust has come off, the area underneath will be pink/reddish. This will fade and normal skin colour returns. If some pigmentation returns, then repeat treatment will be necessary.

Expectations/results

One can expect either complete removal or significant fading of the pigmentation after one treatment but more treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

A Little Care and Affection Can Get You Those Glowing Tresses!

It's impossible to find somebody who does not love her tresses. They are an intrinsic part of your beauty, appeal, and personality. So, whenever your hair begins to show some signs of distress, you get panicked. But, this should not always be the case. In fact, quite a large number of problems with hair are very common in nature. So if you suffer from some of these common problems like dry hair, oily hair, graying hair or frizzy hair, don't worry, as there are innumerable people like you who are also experiencing the same problems.

Dry hair is mostly due to insufficient moisture and oil where its normal sheen and texture cannot be maintained. Too much of washing, dry weather, harsh detergents, poor diet, and some other conditions like malnutrition lead to dry hair. Sometimes, dry hair may also indicate a disease like hypothyroidism and Menkes Kinky Hair syndrome or perhaps too much of sun, chlorine, shampooing, heat styling and just plain neglect.

If you have dry hair, don't fret; just apply a few drops of safflower oil on it while dry, and leave it on for about 2 hours before washing. Make it a point to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner every alternate day and to rinse with water on alternate days. Avoid heat styling as it damages your hair but use more of cold water rinses as this closes hair shafts and makes hair shiny. Appling 5 tablespoons of honey on the scalp and hair, or massaging hair with warm almond oil also bring positive results.

Frizzy hair can happen with both thick and thin hair. A simple wave or a curl can make your hair frizzy. If you have frizzy hair, you have to cool your hair, as coolness closes the cuticle layer of hair strands while hot water only obliterates moisture and enhances fizz.

Cool rinses of water or water and vinegar close the cuticle and add shine to your hair. Once you heatstyle using a blow-dryer, you have to use the cool shot button of your hair dryer to cool the part of your hair you are concentrating on. This not only increases the volume and curl of your hair, but also amplifies the shine. Resist rubbing or creating any friction when towel-drying your hair. Use hand towels, and squeeze your hair from ends to roots instead.

Oily hair is common in them with acne problems, and proves to be difficult to style and manage. However, as commonly thought, oily hair is not caused by an oily scalp, but by a dry scalp. This is because the dry scalp provokes the oil glands to produce more oil and it is this oil that gets transferred to the hair. So to treat oily hair, you have to first focus on the dry scalp.

It is always better to use cleaning shampoos to wash your hair as it scrubs off excess oil. Even applying astringent to the scalp helps in the absorption of excess oil in the hair. A mixture of a teaspoon of aloe vera gel, a tablespoon of lemon juice and a fourth of shampoo should be used to rinse your hair regularly. As oily hair is shiny on its own, avoid using hair gloss gel or any shine hair care products on the hair.

Heredity and age are normal reasons for graying of hair. However, in cases of premature graying, it is important to find the root cause of gray hair. Stress, anxiety, worry, malnutrition, tension, shock and other similar conditions tend to reduce the production of melanin, which then results in graying hair. If you suffer from graying of hair, maintaining a proper diet helps in controlling premature graying or hair. Fruits and vegetables provide the required vitamins and minerals for healthy, shiny and lustrous hair.
